The introduction of exotic species into native ecosystems can be a cause for concern when those species are invasive. Invasive species cause ecological problems and have socio-cultural impacts on human health and the economy; for example, invasive bees may negatively impact their introduced ecosystem by spreading diseases or outcompeting native pollinators. Xylocopa spp. bees are diverse and distributed throughout the Neotropics. However, Xylocopa augusti (Lepeletier, 1841) and Xylocopa splendidula (Lepeletier, 1841) are not native to Mediterranean Chile. This study aimed to evaluate the invasive potential of these exotic species and predict the potential macroecological effects of their invasions. We also aimed to pinpoint possible distributions for these species throughout South America. We correlated biogeographic occurrence data with climatic variables for each species to model their potential distribution in both current and future scenarios. The models provide strong evidence that both species are changing their distributions: their ranges are expanding towards western South America, particularly Bolivia, Chile and Peru. We demonstrate an increase in niche overlap between these species and show there are new geographic areas vulnerable to the establishment of these invasive bees under current and future climate conditions. These data suggest that these bees may adapt their geographic distribution as the climate changes and pose a threat to native pollinators in new geographic areas. 相似文献

In analyzing the region of the Saccharopolyspora erythraea chromosome responsible for the biosynthesis of the macrolide antibiotic erythromycin, we identified a gene, designated eryK, located about 50 kb downstream of the erythromycin resistance gene, ermE. eryK encodes a 44-kDa protein which, on the basis of comparative analysis, belongs to the P450 monooxygenase family. An S. erythraea strain disrupted in eryK no longer produced erythromycin A but accumulated the B and D forms of the antibiotic, indicating that eryK is responsible for the C-12 hydroxylation of the macrolactone ring, one of the last steps in erythromycin biosynthesis. 相似文献

Conditions were established for the regeneration of protoplasts of Streptomyces parvulus and Streptomyces antibioticus to the mycelial form. Regeneration was accomplished with a hypertonic medium that contained sucrose, CaCl2, MgCl2, and low levels of phosphate. High-frequency fusion of protoplasts derived from auxotrophic strains of S. parvulus or S. antibioticus was induced by polyethylene glycol 4,000 (42%, wt/vol). The frequency of genetic transfer by the fusogenic procedure varied with the auxotrophic strains examined. Fusion with auxotrophic strains of S. parvulus resulted in the formation of true prototrophic recombinants. Similar studies with S. antibioticus revealed that both stable prototrophic recombinants and heterokaryons were formed. 相似文献

Epidermal cells from adult guinea pig skin attach and differentiate preferentially on substrates of type IV (basement membrane) collagen, compared to those of types I--III collagen. Experiments presented in this paper were designed to test a new concept concerning the possible pathogenesis of the allergic phenotype. This concept, termed "allergic breakthrough" considers that one of the avenues toward the allergic phenotype involves coincidental sensitization combined with an imbalance in the normal damping mechanism that serves to limit IgE antibody production. The three predictions of this concept that can be tested experimentally are: 1) manipulations that are effective in heightening or re-establishing the damping mechanism should manifest persistence insofar as IgE antibody synthesis to the relevant allergen is concerned; 2) once allergic breakthrough has occurred, the height of production of IgE antibodies specific for the sensitizing agent should remain elevated at levels characteristic of the allergic phenotype, even after the threshold of damping activity has returned to a normal level; and 3) allergic breakthrough should display specificity in that breakthrough would occur in response to subsequent exposure to the specific antigen to which coincidental sensitization initially occurred, but not for other unrelated antigens. The studies presented herein confirm each one of these predictions, thereby providing substantial support for the validity of this concept as one possible distinguishing feature between individuals manifesting the nonallergic and allergic phenotypes, respectively. 相似文献

The mutagenicities of two sets of chemicals acting singly and in pairwise combinations were determined by use of the Salmonella/microsomal assay. The first set consisted of the promutagens of benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(rst)pentaphene. The second set contained the direct-acting mutagens methyl-nitro-nitroso-guanidine and ethyl methane sulfonate. In the tests with the promutagens, the quantities of S-9 mix were varied over the range of 0.05 ml to 1.0 ml with increasing quantities of each chemical. The mutagenic responses or production of revertant colonies of the promutagens, acting singly and in pairwise combinations failed to show an additive effect. Excess quantities of S-9 mix appeared to inhibit partially or totally the mutagenic activity of each chemical, although for each particular dose there was an optimal quantity of S-9 mix to induce maximum activity. However, the direct-acting mutagens produced, individually, almost linear dose responses with increasing concentrations. In pairwise combinations, these chemicals also showed linear responses that closely approximated the theoretical additivity indicating that the mutagenicity of the mixtures was the sum of the activities of each component. 相似文献

The ATPase activity present in plasmalemma-enriched preparations from maize coleoptiles shows an optimum at pH 6, a strong dependence on Mg2+, and is stimulated by K+ and other monovalent cations, both organic and inorganic. The activation of ATPase by K+ obeys Michaelis Menten kinetics, saturation being reached at 50 mM K+ concentration. K+, Mg2+-stimulated ATPase activity is strongly inhibited by N,N-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and by diethylstilbestrol and, to a lesser extent, by octylguanidine.Abbreviations DCCD
